In this video, we crack a router that speaks WEP. Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is a security protocol specified in the IEEE Wireless Fidelity standard. This was the first standard developed for cybersecurity protection. Despite WEP being a bit out-dated it is not uncommon to see. However, more common encryption methods are WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) and WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access II) which require using a Rainbow Table to guess the passwords, making them much more secure. http://null-byte.wonderhowto.com/how-to/hack-wi-fi-cracking-wep-passwords-with-aircrack-ng-0147340/
Password cracking is the process of recovering passwords from data that have been stored in or transmitted by a computer system. Make sure you are trying password cracking in a contained environment. You legally cannot touch another network without permission, or you fall from ethical hacking to unethical hacking. Also, make sure to always take screen shots and record data to cover tracks when doing a Pen Test.
Make sure you have the following four items and tune in to the demo to learn how to crack the WEP encryption method.
Cell Phone (with Wi-Fi)
- Start Aircrack-Ng
- Put wireless adapter in monitor mode
- Start a specific capture on the AP
- Inject ARP traffic
- Crack the password
Take away: If you’re using WEP, it’s time for an upgrade!
