#CyberHeadlines: Kaspersky Lab Researcher Charged with Treason
Last week, Kaspersky Lab came forward, admitting that one of its investigators was- in-fact- arrested in Russia last month (December). Kaspersky issued a statement that the investigator was being tried for investigations taking place before his employment with Kaspersky Lab, and that the arrest/investigation will not affect business as usual. Colleagues speculate that Ruslan Stoyanov (the investigator in question) may have gotten to close to operation Pawn Storm (aka Fancy Bear and APT 28) which is a Russian hacking group associated with U.S. election-related hacks. Stoyanov, known for heading Kaspersky in taking down Lurk- the hacker group known for Russia’s largest financial cyber-attack ($45 million stolen), but is now known as a possible enemy to the state with allegations of treason. This has interesting implications for cybersecurity investigators throughout Russia, now with questions about how their job as investigators may be hindered due to fears of these sorts of allegations.
